I am doing my sewing room up in red, white and aqua so those colours would be nice, something small floral or light coloured would also suit and I am a HUGE fan of Christmas.

2. What colours DON'T you like?
I would have to say steer clear of aboriginal fluro and batiks.

3. What style of quilt do you like best? (Abstract, arty, traditional, modern etc.)
Not fussed, maybe nothing 3D

4. What techniques and trimmings do you like? Applique, embroidery, yoyos, foundation pieced blocks, rik rak, lace, ribbons, buttons...?
Simple pieced quilt with modern quilting

Not overly keen on embellishments or embroidery, and I think hexagons are over rated, lol.

I like bright colours - especially against a white background.

Anything murky or dull.

I'm pretty open to all of these, although probably more modern and arty, than traditional. Would prefer to stay away from anything too country, with chickens or cows etc. I am liking fairy tale and nursery rhyme themes at the moment.

4. What techniques and trimmings do you like?
I love applique. I admire Helen's flying geese. I am open to many things.

5. Is there anything you DON'T want on your quilt?
Chickens, cows... home-sweet-home type sentiments

6. Skill Level
I'm relatively new to quilting, but I've been sewing for a long time. Intermediate but my quilting might be a bit wonky...

While I'd love to say wall hanging, I'm not allowed to put them up as I don't have a dedicated sewing room :( Maddy has a couple already, and Austy has a couple of teddy quilts too but I steel them occasionally to use as photographic backgrounds/props. Would be happy for another for either child, or something I could place on the coffee table (our lounge will be getting a coffee table soon and is white and neutral tones, or something with a bit of chocolate brown or beige and a bright turquoise or lime would go nicely in the family room.)

Yep it is that time of year again....

The 5th Annual EB Doll Quilt Swap

Open to new and old quilters...you will be matched with someone of a similar skill level.

Swap Guidelines:
SIZE: from 13″ x 13″ up to 24″ x 24″ or any rectangle or other shape in between.
FABRIC: natural fibers, please - linen, cotton, or wool.
CONSTRUCTION: Pieced, appliqued, wholecloth, or yo-yos; quilted by hand or machine; and bound. Embellish at will. Embroidery? Rickrack? Buttons? None? You decide.
LABELS: please include a label on the quilt.

I made my Table runner for Natalie and was thrown out of my comfort zone into pinks and browns. Dipped in Chocolate was the result. Mostly strip-pieced, with lots of scribbles for calculations, and a lot of part-sewn seams, which I had to go back and finish later because I chose to join the blocks seamlessly. Fiddly, but worth-while.

Our dining room is quite brown: timber floors, timber slat blinds and our dining setting is a really dark chocolate timber too - so probably a combination of chocolate and pinks would suit both it and my style ;)

2. Kitchen style - modern/vintage/retro/country?
Our kitchen is quite modern with lots of stainless steel appliances, polished wood floors. I do love modern retro inspired prints too.

3. Table size - number of chairs, shape, made of?
Our table is extendable up to 12 seats but usually we have it closed up to fit 8 chairs, the table measures 1.9m x .9m and is rectangular

4. Extra's - do you want/like applique, ribbons, trims etc?
Anything goes with me, I love it all!

1. Favourite colours in life and/or quilting? I like clear colours (not murky country types.) Fave combo - red with pale aqua and white.
2. Kitchen style - modern/vintage/retro/country? beige. late 1980s. Ignore it completely.
3. Table size - number of chairs, shape, made of? we have an 8 seater - 80 inches long, 44 wide, but please don't worry about that - I use smaller runners as well as longer, and they look fine. It's mad eout of stained wood - a bit darker than pine.
4. Extra's - do you want/like applique, ribbons, trims etc? I like applique, but piecing is fine too. I like ricrac, and anything that withstands washing really. I would like my style to be like the Material Obsession stuff.

1. Favourite colours in life and/or quilting? It’s a family joke that if it is green I will want it. Not into pink or shabby chic. Can be bright or blue or creams or red.

2. Kitchen style - modern/vintage/retro/country? Classic, painted creamy yellow with polished floorboards, white cabinets, antique dresser.

3. Table size - number of chairs, shape, made of? Rectangle antique American oak with red velvet upholstery on chairs. Seats 6 but extends.

4. Extra's - do you want/like applique, ribbons, trims etc? I prefer traditional piecing. Needs to be washable and able to survive kids.

This is really exciting for me as we just got our new house and will be moving in when we get home at the start of July. It is very neutral colours and I will love whatever I get and it will have pride of place in the Kitchen/Dining as it will be the first new thing we get for the new house.

I am pretty ecclectic I guess... lean towards blacks/whites, rainbows, 'dirty' vintage and retro. Thats a bit of an ecclectic mix. LOL. Just about the only think I dont like is 'country' style.

We live in an old 1930's house with a classic modern kitchen.

3. Table size - number of chairs, shape, made of?
We are in the market for a new dining squite actually. It will be a 6 seater something like the dark stained bjursta from Ikea.

Generally I like the piecing and quilting to speak for itself... but am pretty open to anything!

I do have a weakness for brights. I am liking white fabric at the moment, don't know how practical that is for a table runner and two kids in the house though!

Hasn't really got a style. At a pinch I'd say modern.

Rectangle, recycled wood, not dark in colour, not baltic, just a medium brown. 6 chairs. I have a runner on there now that is 35 inches, thats a perfect size.

4. Extra's - do you want/like applique, ribbons, trims etc?

1. Favourite colours: I like most colours, I am partial to Christmas Themes and I like the retro look too (Amy Butler kinda style).

2. Kitchen style: normal I think, cream tiled floor, wooden dining table, kids artwork on fridge, I have a decorative tin chook on the fridge and a few tins about for decoration.

3. Table: standard 6 seater, rectangle shaped, made from baltic coloured wood. It's next to a large buffet that holds my Willow Tree Figurines, and I have a burgandy chook wall hanging on the wall next to the dinig table.

4. Extras: Applique is fine, nothing lumpy thanks.

None - DHA rented so anything goes really - We do have blue curtains at the moment though

6 seater, wooden, recycled timer, rectangle, - DH has measured and thinks about 30 inches would be the perfect size for a table runner on our table...i think it would be too short 40 inches maybe?? or something there abouts :P

I like applique...but not a big fan of the others really...but if it looks good use it!!

2. Kitchen style: classic/modern country; rich wood tones
3. Table: seats 6 (68" long) or 8 when extended (85" long), oval shape, made of mahogany.
4. Extras: fine as long as they are washable and flat - but no yoyos please.

Four Seasons Quilt Swap - Spring

Here's the miniature quilt I made for the Four Seasons Quilt Swap spring round. I tried out lots of new techniques here, as well as more free motion quilting. Practice makes perfect they say - if only I had a lot more time to practise! I made it for the Quilting Pirate in the US and she said she loved it - I made it in her favourite colours, so that was a good start!

This is the final set of sewing instructions before laying out the quilt for its big reveal...

Feature Blocks
On the right hand side of 9 feaute blocks sew one hourglass block with the B (lighter) triangle against the feature print.

On the remaining 3 feature blocks sew a flying geese (goose??), again onto the right, with the B (lighter) triangle against the feature print.

Mini Pin-wheel blocks
To each side of the pin-wheel block add a flying geese. This time the flying geese are pointing in towards the pin-wheel.

A Summery of the pieces you have

24 flying geese with wings (sqaures sewn on either end)
8 pin-wheel blocks with flying geese attached to either side
9 feature/hourglass blocks
3 feature/flying geese blocks
3 flying geese - not attached to anything
4 dark squares - not attached to anything
5 border strips of feautre fabric

Mini Pin-Wheel Blocks

Take two of the DHF units and join them together with the light traingles at right angles to each other.

Then join two of these units together to make a mini pin-wheel block...not sure if this is the actual name....just what I call them!

This is may favourite block of the whole quilt...They look so cute and really make the quilt....in my opinion!! You'll end up with 8!

Sew a D square to each end of 24 flying geese.

CBC Unit (Flying Geese)

Attach a C triangle to one of the short sides of triangle B. Lay Triangle B right side up on the table with the right anlge pointing away form you. Lay C down on top with the right anlge clostest to you. You will be sewing along the bias of triangle C, so becareful not to stretch them.

Press seam towards dark colour.

Attach another C triangle to the other side. Again press seam towards dark colour.

Due to my other photos becoming red x's in the cutting post I'm posting these sewing instructions in smaller chunks...hoping to avoid the problem.

EB Unit
Join 18 E and B triangles together, to make a new triangle.Sew each pair exactly the same way ie the same colour on top each time.
Join two EB units together to make 9 hourglass blocks.

These are the first set of instructions for the sewing of the pieces of the mystery quilt....ask any questions in the comments section.

GHF Unit
Sew triangles G and H together. Place the right angles together ontop of each other with H on top. Sew a 1/4 inch seam. Press seam to darker fabric. When opened out H will be on the right. Make 32 GH units.

Join a GH unit to an F triangle. Press seams towards the F triangle. Make 32 GHF units.

A Mystery Quilt designed by AJ

Anyone is welcome to join in. I will be posting instructions here and in my own blog. This quilt will have a feature fabric (light) that you can fussy cut the centre squares for and then 3 (2 x medium, 1 dark) contrasting fabrics....that makes interlocking blocks, that form a pattern and it will have a feature fabric border to finish off....and then binding in one of the medium fabrics....

Bear with me as I attempt to give you instructions for a mystery quilt...I like the idea of a mystery quilt but can never bring myself to make them as I want to make sure I like the quilt before I put time and effort into it! So I designed and made a mystery quilt of my own. I have given two examples of fabric here and here.

Any feature print will work well as the squares of this fabric are fairly large (6.5"). You can fussy cut them to get the best out of the fabric but you may need more fabric than instructed. Cutting instructions include seam allowances. I will be giving all the cutting instructions together. I used snap lock bags to store the pieces labeled with letters. Instructions are for rotary cutting and machine piecing. I will include pictures and diagram where needed. If something doesn't make sense please leave a comment on my blog and I will fix the problem or explain what I mean a little more.

FINISHED QUILT SIZE = 54" square (135cms)

Fabric Requirements
Use quilters fabric (42" wide)
Fabric 1 (feature print) = 52" (130cms) or 31" (80cms) if you don't mind a pieced border
Fabric 2 (light) = 30" (75cms)
Fabric 3 (medium) = 32" (85cms)
Fabric 4 (dark) = 30" (75cms)

Binding
You can use any of the fabrics to make the binding I recommend either Fabric 3 or 4. You will need 15" (40cms) for binding.

Cutting Instructions for all fabrics

Fabric 1
For Fabric 130 cm long
Cut down the lenght of the fabric (so there are no joins in the border)
4 x 3 1/2" strips. Put these aside for the border.
Cut two 6 1/2" strips Cross cut into 12 x 6 1/2" squares.

OR
For Fabric 80 cms long
Cut across the width of the fabric.
Cut 5 x 3 1/2" strips. Put aside for the border.
Cut two strips 6 1/2" wide. Cross cut into 6 1/2". Yeilding 12 x 6 1/2" squares (Remember you can fussy cut these if you like!).
Label as A

Fabric 2
Cut 3 strips 7 1/4" wide. Cross cut into 7 1/4" = yeilding 16 x 7 1/4" squares. Cut twice diagonally to make 64 quarter-square triangles.
Label as B

Fabric 3
Cut from the width of the Fabric
5 x 3 7/8" strips. Cross cut into 46 x 3 7/8" squares.
Cut each square once daigonally to make 92 half-sqaure triangles. Label as C

1 x 7 1/4" strip. Cross cut into 5 x 7 1/4" squares
Cut twice Diagonally to make 20 quater-square triangles (but you will only use 18 Label as E

Cut 1 x 4 1/4" strip.Cross cut into 8 x 4 1/4" squares. Cut each square twice diagonally to make 32 quater-squares traingles.
Label as H

Fabric 4
Cut from the width of the fabric
1 x 4 1/4" strip. Cross cut into 8 x 4 1/4" square. Cut twice diagonally to make 32 quater-square triangles
Label as G

2 x 3 7/8" strips. Cross cutinto 16 x 3 7/8" squares. DO NOT THROW AWAY THE EXTRA PIECE LEFTOVER IN THIS STRIP YOU NEED IT
Cut once diagonally to make 32 half-square triangles
Label as F

Cutting for these squares is tight so go right to the edge. You can cut the extra4 that you need from the remainder of the strip above.
4 x 3 1/2" strips. Cross cut into 48 squares. Cut 4 more squares from the extra pieces. Making a total of 52 x 3 1/2" squares
Label as D

Binding
Cut into 2 1/2" strips. You should get 6.

Our dolly quilt has been played with non-stop for the games of 'patting babies' (ithis is where you sit with a doll on either side of you, wrap them up and then pat them on the back - it came from day care! I happen to think that a more appropriate name is whacking babies because the 'pats' are pretty hard!)

Little trucker quilt for Austy - Thanks AJ!

This was definitely worth the wait - check out those super tiny triangles! Austy's first remarks as we opened the parcel was "Fabwic sor Mummy" (seeing the pretty pink wrapping fabric) then "Woooooooow!!! Little twiangles!!" Then I told him it was his quilt for Benji Bear and he quickly swooped it up and ran to his bedroom to get BB and his buddies, as well as his own baby quilt to go outside for a teddy bears picnic. Here are a few of the photos I snapped as he played.

And of course the little nameless boy doll (my nappy tester before Austy was born, especialily when my friend told me they'd be too big for a newborn...) Just to give you an idea of size, this doll is about the size of a 5-6lb baby.

AJ - I hope you find a pic there that you like for your quilt diary! There are plenty more, but I've already overloaded the blog... woops (insert blushing smilie here)

Kylie has gone with Cate's theme of dogs by using some puppy print feature fabric with a pale pink homespun and hand embroidered a dog motif on the front and hand quilted bones and paw prints! Here is a little preview of the Doll Quilt that i am making. I am still unsure if I will make them smaller or leave them yet as they are quite big and may look a little silly. Actually yes I will make them smaller I think.

Here is another quilt top that I have just finished. It is taken from the "Baby Fats" quilt book and I just used some FQ's that I had in my stash. I still have 3 more to put together. I hope that it doesn't look too scrappy, I had trouble matching up the fabrics, it's not really my strong point.

After getting very frustrated with and not having any inspiration from the materials I had already bought for the Doll Quilt I went to Spotlight...I was very uninspired there too! But came home and sat and sat and looked through my quilting books....and so here is what came of it.....
Some very tiny tiny triangles and lots of fiddling....
makes for some very tiny tiny flying geese...I've never made flying geese before....and tiny is hard...most of the points are right but somehow a few of them moved when I was sewing...I have already unpicked some of them...but I think it adds character...!!

And so yesterday from nothing we now have a completed Dolls Quilt top...waiting sandwiching....which I should get done today....pitty I can't show it yet!!

I’d love a quilt for Romily’s dolly bed. The ‘quilt’ that came with it is definitely not up to scratch! The size of the current quilt is 17” wide and 19” long, so around that size would be great (although I am the first to admit it’s not an exact science!!)

How big is your child's bear/doll?

Obviously I can't ask just the person I am making for as it would give me away, so I thought I'd ask the question generally of everyone. It might help someone else too. Hopefully my swapee will add a comment with her child's bear/doll height ;)

I know you might have a few bears or dolls who will use the quilt, but just pick your child's favourite one to measure up for me.

I want to make a little extra something to go with the quilt, which is why I need the size. A height from head to toe, and a chest measurement would be PERFECT.

At the moment I am in love with the children's Michael Miller prints (especially good for a doll quilt!) so having one of those in there as a feature print would be FANTASTIC!!! As the quilt will be for Austy's boy doll and some teddies, boy colours would be good thanks.

2. What colours DON'T you like? I'd prefer not to have 'I spy' fabric...or licenced cartoons...Dora Thomas etc
3. What style of quilt do you like best? (Abstract, arty, traditional, modern etc.) Any
4. What techniques and trimmings do you like? Applique, embroidery, yoyos, foundation pieced blocks, rik rak, lace, ribbons, buttons...? Any
5. Is there anything you DON'T want on your quilt? Nope not that I know of...

I don't mind the agenda for the swap as long as the time frame stays at the 31 October.

Here are my swap answers
1. What colours do you like? Any but I have a little boy so maybe no pinks as it will be for his Teddy's
2. What colours DON'T you like? Army Green (khaki), too much black.
3. What style of quilt do you like best? (Abstract, arty, traditional, modern etc.) Any
4. What techniques and trimmings do you like? Applique, embroidery, yoyos, foundation pieced blocks, rik rak, lace, ribbons, buttons...?Any
5. Is there anything you DON'T want on your quilt? Not that I can think of.

Hopefully this makes it nice and easy for my partner, I am not a fussy person and we will be happy with what we get.

FQ Help for Doll Quilt....??

Hi all great to have the blog up and running....thanks Helen!!

I'm just putting a suggestion out there....happy to have it shot down in flames....

How would you feel about sending a FQ to your swap partner so they have some idea of you colour preference....kinda like the Blankets of Love idea...and you build onto the FQ as much or as little as you like....

Just an idea....what do you think???

Swap Guidelines:
SIZE: from 13″ x 13″ up to 24″ x 24″ or any rectangle or other shape in between.
FABRIC: natural fibers, please - linen, cotton, or wool.
CONSTRUCTION: Pieced, appliqued, wholecloth, or yo-yos; quilted by hand or machine; and bound. Embellish at will. Embroidery? Rickrack? Buttons? None? You decide.
LABELS: please include a label on the quilt.
